BAYLIS Research Vessel--Educational Programs on the Bay for grades 5-8! (Goal: $4000)
The Derek M. Baylis is a 65-foot auxiliary-powered sailing research vessel that was built to U.S. Coast Guard specifications and launched in 2003. It was specifically designed and constructed to provide a safe, comfortable, fast, and environment-friendly platform for marine research and education.
Educational programs on the Derek M. Baylis are unique because they are modeled after real research that has been done on the vessel. From marine mammal surveys to aquatic debris and refuse monitoring program our crew brings the experience of real science into the hands of our students.
Students in grades 5-88th grades have been or will be experiencing this unique opportunity as we solidify this experience as a regular part of our curriculum. Students in 7th grade made our maiden voyage in February. To help them understand how scientist study marine environments the class spent time collecting and analyzing plankton along the coast of Alcatraz, testing water quality tucked in a cove off Angel Island and conducting mammal counts along the way. Some students even got a chance to become captain and steer the vessel!
Help fund this unique opportunity for our kids!!
